Disorders: It’s all in the Eyes

An overview of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), including best practice assessment and intervention specifics for students will be provided. The school nurse’s ability to effectively interact and respond to health issues for students with autism spectrum disorders will be highlighted.

Ms. Harman has 25 years experience working with managed care plans focusing on the underinsured and the uninsured.
Let No Child Be Without Health Insurance.
This session will provide information to reduce the barriers for children to be enrolled in the CHIP program (which offers health insurance for uninsured children). Learn how to submit a CHIP application and the proper documentation required for efficient processing. The school nurse will gain knowledge to assist families and students in navigating the application process.

* The annual basket raffle to benefit the legislative efforts for school health issues will begin during morning break. Basket/gift donations to this cause will be accepted during registration on Friday and Saturday morning. You will experience a one-of-a-kind motivational, nutritional education program. Through audience participation and magic, this program is designed to teach the importance of good nutrition and staying active with the use of magic and illusion to create an memorable experience.

Beth Anne Bahn, Director, Division of School Health, PA Department of Health
The Pennsylvania Departments of Education and Health have developed non-mandatory state guidelines for managing life threatening food allergies in schools. A multi-disciplinary approach is imperative to provide a safe learning environment for students with life threatening food allergies. This session will describe how childhood allergies can impact student health and provide a summary of the new guidelines. .

In the interactive session you will make octopus bananas, play nutrition trivia, and learn a nutrition related magic trick. Enjoy learning activities to help students learn about nutrition.
(S04) School Nurse Technology in the 21st Century
Jared Reck, Technology Integration Coach, Google Certified Teacher, Masters Degree Multimedia Technology, North Allegheny Intermediate High School and Charity Istone, MSN, CRNP, School Nurse North Allegheny Intermediate High School.
Have you ever wondered about what Technology is available to promote School Health Services and improve communications in you school community? You will experience hands on opportunity to practice your skills. Each participant should bring their personal laptop.

(S05) Cortical Visual Impairment: Most Common Cause of Visual Impairment
Maryanne Loebig, MSN, CRNP, Director of Health Services, Western PA School for Blind Children, Pittsburgh, PA
Did you know that the most common cause of visual impairment in children is Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI)? This session will provide information on environmental adaptations and equipment for students with CVI. Additionally, you will learn simple adaptive materials that can be utilized in the school setting. Case presentations will be included.

Overview of anaphylaxis and treatment will be discussed.

(S07) An Addict in the School, an Addict in the Home
Tish S. Foster, RN, CSN, Med., MSN, Oxford Area High School, Andrew Foster
Learn about drug abuse through the eyes of both a student as well as a school nurse. Recognize signs and symptoms of drug use in schools and at home. A young man will give a personal story of his triumphs and tribulations. Information on addiction, recovery, and transition back to the school setting will be provided.

(S11) Pediatric Assessment- Stabilization – The Greatest Challenge
Judith Haluka, BS, RCIS
At the completion of this session, the school nurse will be able to complete a fast and efficient assessment on pediatric patients to determine seriousness of injury/illness. This session will demonstrate assessment tools and strategies utilized in the school setting.
(S12) Managing Students with Seizures
Mary Grattan, BS
This session will cover information ranging from basic seizure recognition and first aid to developing an effective seizure action plan. The psychosocial aspects of epilepsy will be addressed. The school nurse will be provided with information, strategies and resources that will enable better management of the student with seizures.
(S13) Teen Parenting: Playing for Keeps High School Outreach Program
Mr. Tom Sheaffer, Director Division of Program Development and Evaluation, Ms. Susan Boyer, PACSETI Instructor, Mr. Kevin Loughnane, PACSETI Instructor
Numerous aspects of lifestyle changes in teen parenting will be included in this program. This session will provide resources for school nurses dealing with teen-age pregnancy in their schools. Actual teen parent testimonials will be presented.

All guests must make reservations directly with the Hotel on an individual basis, identifying themselves as attendees of the PASNAP Conference to receive the discounted rate. Please use PAAD12B.
Room Rates are $119.00 plus tax per night for a single or double, $119.00 for a triple and $119.00 for a quad during the block of time from April 12, 2012 – April 15, 2012.
Please note the above rates are subject to PA sales tax and occupancy tax. A $1.00 +tax safe charge is mentioned as an additional charged item.
Reservations must be made by March 12, 2012 in order to secure the PASNAP discounted rates and block of rooms reserved.
Registration Guidelines:
Pre-conference: The separate fee for the pre-conference includes the selected workshop(s) only.
Conference: The registration fee includes the following meals: Saturday April 14, 2012 through Sunday April 15, 2012: lunch and dinner on Friday, and lunch on Sunday are on your own.
NO ONSITE REGISTRATIONS/NO REFUNDS
All completed registrations MUST BE POSTMARKED BY MARCH 12, 2012 and
must include payment in full — no credit cards or purchase orders will be accepted.
ALL REGISTRATIONS ARE FINAL.
